Set in Weimar Germany soon after Germany's catastrophic loss of World War I, the story follows young veteran Wolf, a handsome, amiable and shiftless young man, addicted to the thrill of gambling. Recklessly losing everything in Berlin, a city in chaos, he flees to the countryside.
